If you, like many Americans, want to be both physically and mentally healthy, but aren’t sure how to get there, you’re not alone. Many of us are busy business owners who eat meals on the fly, have no time to fit in a workout, and push sleep to the minimum hours it takes to get by.
Just because you can function like this now doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about how to take care of yourself, as well as take the steps necessary to get healthier. Why not make a pledge to make this year your healthiest? It’s easier than you might think. Try integrating some or all of these tips to increase your health (and, in turn, your productivity at work) and happiness in 2019.
Five Daily Health Tips
- Drink more water
You’ve heard it a million times, but it’s nonetheless great advice. It keeps your energy levels up, increases your brain’s performance, can help you lose weight and stave off headaches. To make sure you’re drinking enough water, bring it with you wherever you go. Fill up a water bottle in the morning and take it with you in the car, to your meetings, with you on a mid-afternoon walk, to every meal and to bed at night. Be sure to refill it often! - Exercise three to four days a week (or more)
Exercise can be as simple as a walk around the park on your lunch break or more intensive like a Zumba class. What you do is up to you — but a mixture of cardio and strength-training workouts every week are your best bet for optimal physical fitness. - Eat the rainbow
Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables every day is important to providing your body with all the nutrients it needs. To get in your five servings a day, get creative. For example, pack a salad for lunch with mixed greens, apple or orange slices, blueberries, red peppers and carrots. Or, add tomatoes and spinach to your eggs in the morning. Get creative! - Don’t skimp on sleep
Aim for seven to nine hours a night. Try going to bed a half an hour earlier, and skip the screens at night, which can make it harder for you to fall asleep. Other ways to ensure a good night’s sleep include laying out your clothes and planning your meals the night before, keeping a nightly routine and writing down any worries or thoughts that keep you up at night on a journal beside your bed. - Avoid sugar
Are you drinking sugary drinks all day or hitting the vending machines when hunger strikes? See if you can make some smart swaps to reduce or eliminate sugar from your diet.
