Franchise Search Thoughts During Home Remodel!

This past weekend, I started what seemed like a simple project –  finish the “demo” of our half bath. It was as simple as removing the baseboards and flooring. What I didn’t know was that the baseboards were GLUED to the wall and finished with a waterproof sealant, effectively obliterating the seam between the baseboard and wall. A thirty-minute job became a ninety-minute job, and at the end, the refinishing project to replace the floor and features now includes sanding, skim-coating, sanding, and painting, and THEN replacing the flooring and baseboards. 😊

Several times during the demolition, and then the shopping, I thought of how this is so like life: What is on the surface isn’t necessarily reality and once you start you just need to put your head down and plow forward.

Let’s bring it around to your franchise searches. You like what you see on the surface: the $$, the fun, the comradery, however my relationship with you is to push you to look at the other factors that can impact your satisfaction as an owner of the business, such as number and type of employees, who goes out and sells, who manages staff, back office responsibilities, ramp-up, etc. Essentially, we are going to talk about the critical characteristics of business success that are important to you and that will drive the research to identify potential brands to present.

Just like a home improvement project, any business you choose, no matter how much investigation you do, will look different on the inside than it did from the outside. During your evaluation, you might decide not to start the project at all. But if you decide that the investment makes sense, at the start you must decide to have the mindset that you are going to finish. Put your head down (or sometimes up!) and push through the really hard parts that always occur in the beginning and keep your end goal in mind.

Your hard work and ability to adapt will create the finished product, your successful business, that is SO MUCH MORE than ever dreamed.
